What is a Limited Edition Print?
Most Artists specialise in making and selling original paintings only.
An original painting or drawing means the very piece of art that the Artist has made by hand in their chosen media (for example: paint on canvas or graphite pencil on paper, etc).
Original paintings and drawings can be quite expensive due to the amount of time it takes to create original art. However there is an alternative to original works of art that can be more cost effective and accessible to the collector or the general public in the form of Limited Edition Prints.
Limited Edition Prints are reproductions made from capturing the image of an original painting and printing that image. Prints are made in Limited batches so that the artworks still maintains some degree of exclusivity which gives rise to the term ‘Limited Edition’.
Limited Edition Prints are usually limited to a certain predetermined number of pieces (for example 100 pieces or ‘Editions’), and it is customary to display the edition number written on the print itself along with a hand written signature of the artist (certifying that this print is approved by the Artist as being their work).
While most Limited Edition Prints can be quite inexpensive, they can rise in value over time due to various factors.
How Limited Edition prints are made
Limited Edition Prints are produced by first capturing the image of the painting (usually in digital form). To capture a painting’s image requires specialist equipment to ensure a high quality, high resolution image which is suitable to reproduce into high quality prints.
Once the image is captured and recorded digitally, the image is then checked and edited in a digital imaging program such as Photoshop (usually to clean or repair any imperfections to the image that resulted from the imaging process itself), this part of the process usually includes colour matching the image to be printed with the original painting.
Once the image is approved for reproduction, it is then collated onto a page design with margins or boarders added. Text can then be added for titles, captions and other information to be displayed on the print.
The newly designed print can then be reproduced as a limited batch print run or reproduced as required by the customer.
