An American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD80 soars high over Dallas, Texas after its departure from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
The Super 80 or Mad Dog as it was also affectionately called, entered service with American Airlines in May 1983 with three aircraft serving six American cities — Dallas, Detroit, New York, Memphis, Nashville, and Ontario, California. The last MD80 revenue flight for American Airlines, Flight 80, was from Dallas Fort Worth to Chicago O’Hare International Airport on September 4, 2019, marking the end of 36 years of service for the airline.
The aircraft registered N437AA, a variant designated MD-83, was powered by two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-219 low-bypass turbofan engines with a combined maximum thrust of 42,000lbf (187kN).
