Wednesday, February 1st 2023, and the last Boeing 747 to roll off the production line takes to the sky on her delivery flight with the eyes of the world watching on. The last Queen of the Skies wears the livery of Atlas Air, a symbolism befitting the 747’s long and storied career characterized by poise, strength and longevity. She departs from Boeing’s famous Everett Paine Field, the very same place from whence the first 747 took off on her maiden flight on
February 9th, 1969 – some 54 years prior.
Named Empower, this last airframe in the 747 lineage of 1574 examples built, bears a special dedication to Joe Sutter – the man credited as the ‘the father of the 747’ for his role as the manager of the design team for the iconic aircraft.
This 747-8F registered N863GT is powered by four GEnx-2B67 high bypass turbofan engines capable of a combined thrust of 266,000 lbf (1183kN) and has a MTOW of 987,000 pounds (447,695 kilograms).
