Antarctic Odyssey
Qantas A380 over Antarctica
Celebrating New Year 2010 in truly unique and magnificent style, a Qantas Airlines Airbus A380 chartered by Croydon Travel has made the journey south from Sydney, Australia, via Melbourne, to the frozen continent of Antarctica, thus becoming the first ever Airbus A380 to make a commerical flight to this mystical place. Against the magical backdrop of rock and ice, of towering snow-covered mountains and of vast glaciers frozen in time, all aglow in the light of the Antarctic midnight sun, passengers thrill to the sights below as the jazz band plays Auld Lang Syne.
The Qantas Airbus A380 is under the command of the veteran Captain John Dennis on his 40th flight to Antarctica, as it soars quietly and smoothly above the massive expanse of the Priestly Glacier, a 96km long valley glacier originating at the edge of the polar plateau of Victoia Land.
Also visible is the enormous volcanic cone of Mt Melbourne rising to some 2,732m (8,963 ft). The Airbus A380 is powered by four Rolls Royce Trent 900 series turbofan jet engines, each producing more than 80,000lb of thrust.
